Abstract

This article examines the application of non-contact geodetic methods for the digitisation and preservation of cultural heritage sites in a critical state of disrepair. The subject of the study is the fortified Church of the Holy Trinity (1590–1600) in the village of Sokolivka, Lviv Oblast. The aim of the study is to justify and implement a methodology for creating a three-dimensional polygonal textured model (mesh model) of the fortified church based on the synthesis of terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry data. Field surveys were carried out using a Trimble TX6 scanner (48 stations) and a digital camera (1,447 images). Initial processing of the scans was carried out in Trimble RealWorks, whilst precise orientation, polygonal mesh generation, decimation and projection texturing were performed using RealityCapture software. The result is a three-dimensional polygonal textured model that reproduces, with millimetre accuracy, the spatial geometry of the building, its deformations, as well as the preserved interior elements and fragments of frescoes. The technical challenges are highlighted: the impact of vegetation on geometric noise, the resource-intensive nature of texturing, and the presence of ‘blind spots’ in the upper part of the roof when capturing images from the ground. The resulting three-dimensional polygonal textured model serves as a reliable basis for monitoring deformations, scientific and restoration work, and the virtual reconstruction of the monument.
