Within the industrial zone of the Kryvyi Rih Basin (Kryvyi Rih City, Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine), which is characterized by a high technogenic load on the environment due to the operation of numerous mining and metallurgical complex (MMC) facilities, studies were conducted to identify and analyze changes in land use as signs of land degradation processes. Data from multispectral imaging by the Sentinel-2 satellite from 09/16/2023 and 03/14/2026 were used. It was established that over the past 2.5 years, clearly pronounced changes have occurred in the territory, which concern two “new” tailings ponds located north of the mine water storage pond in the Svystunov beam, and to some extent concern the Voykove tailings pond. The compartments of the new tailings ponds are already approximately ¼ full of MMC waste. The Voykove tailings facility is characterized by its readiness to localize the next volumes of waste within its boundaries, as evidenced by a protective film covering almost its entire surface, including previously deposited waste. Therefore, the introduction into active operation and the increase in the volumes of potentially toxic waste of the Kryvbas industrial zone within the specified tailings facilities will subsequently create an additional negative load on the urban ecosystem of the territory, contribute to the deterioration of the ecological situation, and ultimately to the deepening of land degradation processes both within its boundaries and in adjacent areas.
