Abstract

Approaches to specifying the hypocenters of earthquakes in western Ukraine are presented. The relevance of the study is related to the need for reliable tracking of seismically active tectonic structures in the region to clarify the level of various natural and man-made geoecological hazards, solution of engineering-geophysical problems of construction and safe operation of various buildings and engineering facilities, oil and gas prospecting, etc. The methodology combines known approaches using regional seismological hodographs and new methods of precise determination of coordinates and depths of earthquake foci on instrumental seismological data. The latter include the construction and use of regional calculated hodographs built on the basis of averaged regional flat-layered velocity models of the earth’s crust of the region and its separate zones based on the data of regional DSZ profiles, methods of determining and taking into account kinematic corrections for the deviation of the velocity structure of the earth’s crust in separate areas from average velocity model for the region. Peculiarities of computer realization of the specified approaches using modern information and GIS technologies, ways of optimizing their computational algorithms, etc. are considered. The use of the listed approaches makes it possible to significantly increase the accuracy of determination of coordinates and depths of hypocenter of local earthquakes in Western Ukraine, reliably trace seismically active faults and estimate their seismotectonic activity, and use the obtained results to solve various current scientific and practical problems. As an example of application of these approaches the results of relocation of the technogenic karst-downfall (collapse) earthquake in the city Stebnyk outskirts in 2017 are given.
