Abstract

Ukraine is one of the key countries in the global food system due to its rich agricultural resources and significant production of agricultural products. Ukraine holds leading positions in the production and export of grains, sunflower oil, corn, and other important agricultural commodities, making it a critical supplier in the global food market.

In the conditions of the introduction of martial law, the situation is complicated by several factors, including disruptions in logistics chains, destruction of infrastructure, risks for producers, and limited access to resources. This can lead to a significant reduction in production and export volumes, which, in turn, will negatively impact global food security, especially in countries heavily dependent on Ukrainian products.

The importance and relevance of innovative ideas for the joint development of global stakeholders in the agricultural sector is undeniable. In this aspect, Ukraine's significance on the international level (as a major source of a substantial portion of the world's agricultural exports before the introduction of martial law) is high. At the beginning of 2023, Ukraine was the source of almost half of the world's oil exports. In 2022, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine (2021) established that Ukraine produced 106 million tons of grain, legumes, and oilseeds, setting a record. The Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (2023) reported that in 2022, Ukraine exported agricultural products worth over 27 billion USD globally. Ukraine's primary export markets included 27 countries, currently comprising the European Union (7.6 billion USD), the People's Republic of China (4.2 billion USD), India (2 billion USD), Egypt (1.5 billion USD), and the Republic of Turkey (1.5 billion USD). In 2022, Ukraine accounted for 10% of global grain trade, ranking fourth among the largest exporters, with the EU – all 27 members combined – ranking fifth. Specifically, Ukraine ranked third globally in rapeseed exports, fourth in corn, and eighth in wheat exports (Table 1). Ukraine is also a significant player in the global oil and oilseed markets. Before the Russian invasion, it exported more than half of the world's sunflower oil supplies and was the number one producer, ranked sixth in global barley supplies (Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2023). According to the overview, Ukraine is the largest exporter of agricultural products according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture data.
