Abstract 

The paper proposes a new, comprehensive approach to documenting objects of material cultural heritage using digital technologies and geographic information systems. The study was conducted for UNESCO monuments in the historic centre of Lviv. A generalised technological scheme of work has been proposed and implemented, which includes digital imaging, construction, visualisation, modelling, mapping and inventory of historical and cultural monuments. The generation and 3D modelling of objects was carried out using specialised software ReCap Photo and ArcCam. A graphic and attribute database for photo and video archiving and storage of large arrays of graphic and descriptive information about cultural heritage sites was organised in the ArcGIS software environment. A local information and reference GIS with the ability to visualise virtual and dynamic objects on a plan was created. The introduction of GIS in the monument protection sector will help to solve the problems of documenting, inventorying and preserving cultural heritage sites.
