Abstract

Considering natural vegetation growth on mine waste dumps as a diagnostic indicator for selecting reclamation methods, the vegetation index (NDVI) was used to identify a clear differentiation of the mine waste dump into two areas: one with vegetation cover and the other with phytotoxic substrate where plant growth does not regenerate. In addition to remote sensing methods for general characterization and verification of results, a range of field and laboratory scientific methods were employed, including botanical, landscape, cartographic, and soil science approaches. Since the overall vegetation cover of the dump is 33%, with more than 80% of the cover located in one area, and the rest of the area consisting of phytotoxic rocks creating unfavorable growth conditions, a differentiated approach is proposed. Specifically, for the phytotoxic area, a fundamental reclamation with the application of fertile and potentially fertile soils (clays, loams, sandy loams, sands) is suggested due to the vegetation cover being less than 20%. For the area with vegetation cover, targeted fundamental reclamation is recommended in places where natural vegetation has not occurred. The research established that the use of GIS technologies for choosing reclamation methods for phytotoxic waste dumps is highly effective, as confirmed by field and laboratory general biological and ecological studies. Additionally, GIS can provide further information about the characteristics of the dump and the surrounding area.
