Abstract

The study is devoted to analyzing the impact of hydrotechnical reclamation on the moisture conditions of the Polissya, particularly within the Kholonevychi drainage system in the Volyn region (Northwestern Ukraine). In their natural state, these territories are characterized by excessive moisture, but the operation of drainage systems has changed the hydrological regime, leading to both improved conditions for agriculture and the degradation of natural ecosystems.

Remote methods were used to assess spatial and temporal changes in moisture, in particular the NDMI (Normalized Difference Moisture Index) and NDMI for moisture stress indices. Analysis of data for 2020–2025 revealed a predominance of water stress on most of the drained land, especially on plowed areas. Conversely, areas with natural or semi-natural vegetation retain higher moisture levels. There is a tendency toward a decrease in soil moisture despite a slight increase in precipitation, which is due to rising temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns.

The results obtained confirm the need to transition to regulated water management, take climate change into account, and combine agricultural and environmental goals in the functioning of land reclamation systems.
